Locking Fuel Door for the Ford E-450 Chassis (Class C Motorhomes)

If you own a Class C motorhome, there is a good chance it sits on a Ford E-450 cutaway chassis — the most common Class C platform on the road. And if you have ever walked around the back and looked at the fuel fill, you already know the complaint that fills RV forums: the fuel fill is wide open. No lock, and often just a friction cap anyone can twist off in the campground.

Why E-450 owners want a lock

On the iRV2, Forest River Forums, and Good Sam boards, the E-450 fuel-security question comes up constantly. The concern is rarely just theft of fuel. Owners tell the same three stories over and over:

  • Tampering and contamination. An open fill means anyone can drop something in the tank while you are parked at a rally, a rest stop, or overnight. That fear — not the price of a few gallons — is what drives most owners to look for a lock.
  • Casual siphoning. An exposed fill is an easy, opportunistic target. A locked door removes the easy option.
  • Peace of mind on a big investment. You protect the door, the bay, and the hitch — the fuel fill is the one opening left unsecured.

The problem with replacement locking caps

The usual advice is “just buy a locking gas cap.” On a modern E-450 that creates two new problems. First, many aftermarket caps do not seal the EVAP system the way the OEM cap does, which throws a check-engine light. Second, most budget locking caps use the same universal CH751 key — the identical key sold on every RV, boat, and cabinet lock. A “lock” that opens with a key thousands of people already own is not really a lock.

A locked door removes exactly that opportunity, which is what actually happens to RVers.
